In the wake of a global pandemic, a crippling cost of living crisis, and years of brutal cuts to mental health services, a shocking reality emerged: millions were being left in the lurch. Joanna Howarth and Katie Millard saw firsthand the devastating impact. People in crisis – adults, children, everyone – were simply unable to access the support they desperately needed, often left waiting for months or denied altogether.
The numbers paint a grim picture: a recent report by the Centre for Mental Health (March 2024) revealed a 2% cut to public health funding on top of a staggering 26% reduction since 2016. This translates to local authorities having fewer resources to protect the public's mental well-being and support those struggling.
Even more alarming, a quarter of a million children (270,300) referred to mental health services in 2022-23 are still waiting, while a staggering 39% (372,800) had their referrals closed before ever receiving help (Children’s Commissioner for England).
This is why Happiness for All CIC was founded in February 2023.
